Zero Plastic Campus Initiative

Objectives

To eliminate single-use plastic from campus and create environmental awareness among students and staff.

Context

Rising plastic pollution and its impact on the local environment prompted the college to take proactive steps toward sustainability.

Practice Description

The college banned all single-use plastic items including bags, cups, plates, and straws on campus. Reusable alternatives were distributed to students. An environmental club was formed with student volunteers who conduct weekly awareness drives. Dustbins for segregated waste collection were installed. Plantation drives are held quarterly.

Evidence of Success

Reduction of plastic waste by approximately 80% on campus; 500+ students participated in awareness drives; Green Campus certification applied for.

Bridge Course for Fresher Students

Objectives

To bridge the academic gap between Class 12 and college-level education, especially for students from rural backgrounds.

Context

A significant number of students admitted to HR PG College come from rural schools where quality of education may differ from urban institutions.

Practice Description

A 2-week bridge course is conducted at the start of each academic year for all first-year students. The course covers basic concepts in core subjects, study skills, time management, and college life orientation. Mentors (senior students) are paired with freshers.

Evidence of Success

Improved first-semester performance; reduced dropout rate; higher student satisfaction scores in feedback.

Mentor-Mentee Programme

Objectives

To provide personal academic and emotional guidance to students through a structured mentoring system.

Context

Students, especially first-generation learners, often need guidance beyond academics including career counselling and personal development.

Practice Description

Each faculty member is assigned 15-20 students as mentees. Monthly one-on-one meetings are held. Faculty maintain mentoring diaries recording student progress, issues, and follow-up actions. Parents are contacted in case of attendance/academic issues.

Evidence of Success

Improved attendance rate; early identification of at-risk students; stronger student-faculty relationships.
